This is the more common name for a natural occurrence otherwise known as an algal bloom. The bloom turns red or brown resulting in the coloration of some parts of the water. During this phenomenon, a potent neurotoxin, known as the brevetoxin, is produced killing marine life, seabirds, and even humans when they are exposed or have consumed seafood contaminated with brevetoxin.
